teethxray-300x242When many people think about x-rays, they think about radiation. As a result, far too many parents have great reservations about having their children’s teeth x-rayed. X-rays are an invaluable diagnostic tool for dentists.

These x-rays help dentists notice whether or not the teeth are coming in properly, the size of the teeth, and any empty spaces that could indicate missing teeth. They also allow dentist to be able to notice specific injuries, oral infections, and potential bone disease that could be problematic in the future.

There is no regular consensus at this time about when children should first be x-rayed. It basically will depend on the child’s specific development and overall dental health. If the child has a history of numerous cavities, tooth decay, or other serious oral health issues, his or her dentist may recommend x-rays sooner rather than later. Some children will require more x-rays than others, simply because of the condition of their overall oral health.

Bitewing x-rays are the most common form used by dentists. These x-rays allow the dentist to be able to see in the spaces between the teeth that cannot be seen with the naked eye. This can indicate when cavities are beginning to show between those teeth. Some dentists talk about these and call them ‘cavity detecting x-rays.’

Are x-rays safe?

When you’re talking about x-rays for teeth, the amount of radiation that is used is so minimal that there is really no risk to their health in any way. This includes short-term as well as long-term risks.

It’s one thing to have many different x-rays taken several times throughout the year. If the dentist is requiring multiple x-rays several times in a short period of time, then it’s best to talk to the dentist and find out why they’re requiring this many. It could indicate a potentially serious problem with your child’s oral health or the need to find a different dentist.

When used sparingly, x-rays are a powerful diagnostic tool, but when overused, the parent should be concerned and question the need for so many.
