smiling-girl-dentist-300x199Accepting the fact that it’s time to see a dentist (especially if it’s been years) is a great first step. You may be like millions of other people throughout Ontario who are nervous, anxious, and stressed about seeing their dentist when it’s been a long, long time.

Finding the right dentist is going to be essential to having a positive experience, which will improve the odds that you’ll return for a follow up appointment when you should (about every six months).

A family dentist simply refers to one that will work on adults and children. Some dentists specialize in children only while others focus more on adults. It’s a personal preference that they have chosen, and it doesn’t signify one is better than the other.

In order to determine if a family dentist is right for you, consider these three signs.

1. Location. Location is important when you’re talking about visiting a dentist. If the family dentist you choose requires you to drive 20 or 30 minutes through rush hour traffic, a million stop lights, and more, you’re less likely to continue going.

It’s going to be much easier to put off those important appointments. Find one that is close to you so it’s convenient for you and your family.

2. The whole family can be checked out regularly. A family dentist will be willing and able to accept your entire family as clients. This can make it convenient, especially if you have children.

3. You feel comfortable when you go to the office. The moment you step into a dentist office, you should feel comfortable. The waiting area should be clean, neat, and comfortable. It doesn’t need to have a TV, but it might. Whatever you determine to be comfortable is what matters most.

If you’re not comfortable in the waiting area, you’re going to be anxious heading into your appointment and that’s not what anyone wants.
